REF # 0001

An eminent philatelist once noted that the higher denomination Rhodesia (BSAC) stamps with seeming, postally-used cancels need to be considered forged unless proven otherwise.  A small number of genuine CTO (Cancelled-To-Order) 'remainder' cancels exist as well as a handful of genuine, postally-used examples.  It should be stressed that these stamps were overwhelmingly used for fiscal purposes.

As in the example to the left, an inked initial was often all that was used to fiscally cancel the stamp.  It did not take long for those early collecting enthusiasts as well as general opportunists to clean off the inked cancel and re-use the stamp, or offer the stamp to the philatelic market with a forged cancel.  One hundred years ago, these forgeries were mostly crude and therefore easy for our contemporary collectors to spot.  Realizing what was going on, the BSAC took to perfinating stamps used for fiscal purposes to prevent their re-use.

Depending on the ink used, the outline of the fiscal cancel can sometimes be seen when the stamp is placed under ultraviolet light.

We also find forged cancels on stamps that were not used for fiscal purposes - especially where a stamp had more value used than unused.

REF # 1012zd (SG 12)

The font style is crude and not consistent with the single circle UMTALI cancel.  Presumably a forgery.

Another crude KOPJE forgery.  Lettering too thin.

1013ab

REF # 1013ab (SG 13)

Another crude KOPJE forgery (font too thin).  This one has a 1982 PFSA certificate of authenticity.  In reality, it is a forged cancel over a cleaned fiscal - the outline of which is visible in the E margin at the level of the legs of the left antelope, angling up in a north-easterly direction.  Offered at a USA auction house in March, 2014.

1013ac

1013ba

REF # 1013ba (SG 13)

Same as above forgery. This stamp was submitted to the B.P.A. in 2012 who confirmed its status as a forgery (over a cleaned fiscal).

1013bb

REF # 1013bb (SG 13)

Forged barred cancels - not the BSAC style.

1013bc

A forged cancel with three solid bars below the circle.  The genuine has four solid bars.  See R.C. Knight p. 137; H. Hoyte p. 17; J. Barry p. XV.

Offered for sale on eBay in 2013 by a well-known Australian auction house, this stamp has an R.P.S. certificate dated 1972 (# 78762).  The R.P.S. were clearly uninformed.  No such canceller was used in Rhodesia.  See Ref # 1013ba above for correct 'style' of barred diamond canceller.

1013h

REF # 1013h (SG 13)

Over a fiscal cancel, the TATI cancel has the feel and look of a forgery. At best, by favor, but that is really pushing it. The density and color of the ink suggests a later addition to what is otherwise a fiscally used stamp.
